American brick of 1812

On July 23, 1812, at Vergennes, north of Lake Champlain, on Otter Creek, over 200 master carpenters, under the direction of Adam and Noah Brown, laid the keel of a new 20-gun brig: the Eagle. The launch of this brig, 117 feet long, 34 feet wide and armed with 12 carronades and 8 cannons, for a total weight of 508 tons, took place on August 11, 1814. With its shallow draught, the Eagle could navigate the lake's low waters without difficulty. Her crew numbered 150. On August 31, the Royal Navy fleet, to which the Eagle belonged, set sail for Plattsburgh (New York), where the ships, after anchoring inside the bay, formed up to repel any attack from any direction.
